Looking to boost your employee productivity in 2023? You have a wide range of options for improving the efficiency of the workplace. In exactly the same way you don’t want to be scheduling unnecessary meetings, you will want to foster intrinsic motivation through autonomy and recognition.

However, you may be overlooking one of the most obvious and easiest ways to improve your employee productivity: Food.

Pizza — Food for thought? Questionable.

This actually makes a lot of sense. After all, if your team is only eating low-nutrient foods like donuts and pizza — how well do you think they’re going to perform compared to those who consume nutrient-rich foods like nuts and berries?

These nutrient foods can increase focus, memory, and stabilize your mood, which is why they’re brain food. They’re also good for your overall health, which is always a plus because how productive can you be when you’re not feeling 100 percent?

Healthy Snacks From Nature

Instead of keeping junk food in the office, provide your team with the following snacks straight from Nature. And, if you have a virtual team, you can at least encourage them to have these items in their homes. As an aside — have you thought about sending your remote team some nutritious office snacks?

1. Green, Leafy Vegetables

Green Office Vegetable Snacks.jpg

Spinach, kale, collards, and broccoli are all rich in nutrients like vitamin K, lutein, folate, and beta carotene. These brain-healthy nutrients have been found to slow cognitive decline thanks, particularly, to the plant pigment lutein. This allows older adults to continue using the skills and knowledge that they’ve acquired throughout life.

If you don’t have a fridge or these veggies aren’t in season, kale and spinach chips should suffice.

2. Avocado

Healthy Office Snacks - Avocado

I’m certainly biased here. I LOVE avocados. In fact, when making sandwiches I replace mayo with an avocado spread. Who doesn’t enjoy guacamole?

As if I needed another reason to eat more avocado, research has found that the monounsaturated fats, fiber, and lutein found in them can improve memory and problem-solving skills.

3. Carrots

Carrots make healthy office snacks

Carrots are rich in Vitamin A, which is good for your eyes. They’re full of luteolin. This a compound that can reduce age-related memory deficits, as well as inflammation in the brain.

Also, carrots dipped in hummus is a quick and delicious snack.

4. Tomatoes

Tomatoes make great healthy snacks

Tomatoes are packed with a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. This antioxidant is a free-radical fighter. This means your body won’t get as inflamed. As a result, you won’t get as anxious or depressed, which allows you to focus better.

Lycopene is also known for combating heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and many cancers.

5. Berries

Berries make delicious office snacks

Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries contain flavonoids. Besides keeping berries their brilliant hues, flavonoids have been found to help improve memory. This makes berries one of the best healthy office snacks on the market.

Berries also come with additional health benefits like having antioxidants to act against oxidative stress and inflammation. Best of all, you can enjoy them on their own, throw them into a salad, or make a nutritious shake.

6. Beets

Beets are super healthy

Scientists at Wake Forest found that the natural nitrates found in beets can increase blood flow to the brain. As a result, this improves mental performance.

Unless your Dwight Schrute, you’re probably not a huge fan of this root vegetable. But, here’s a recipe for honey-roasted beets that isn’t too bad.

7. Eggplant

Eggplant health snack

Ever wonder why eggplants have that purple hue? It’s because of a powerful antioxidant called nasunin. Like other antioxidants, nasunin can prevent inflammation and helps protect against cancerous development. Nasunin can also intensify communication between brain cells.

I enjoy eggplant, but some people aren’t a fan of the texture. You might be able to change their minds with any of these delicious eggplant recipes.

8. Red Grapes

Employees love Red Grapes for snacks

Research from Northumbria University suggests that red wine can boost brain power thanks to resveratrol and how it increases blood flow to the brain. Obviously, you don’t want your time to drink on the job, but the good news is that resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes. So, the next time you need a snack, munch on some red grapes.

9. Almonds

Healthy Office Snacks - Almonds

Almonds contain “good fats,” polyunsaturated fats and essential fatty acids. These can lower your cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. Additionally, almonds have Omega-3 fatty acid, which reduces inflammation. This fatty-acid also comes with high-energy calories, meaning that almonds are the ideal snack between meals.

10. Walnuts

Quick healthy snack - walnuts

Like almonds, walnuts can lower blood pressure and protects arteries because of a type of omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Walnuts have also been found to improve memory. In fact, a study from UCLA found that those who had a high walnut consumption improved their cognitive test scores.

11. Peanut Butter

Peanut Butter Office Snack

Peanut butter contains choline, an essential nutrient that can positively affect liver function, healthy brain development, muscle movement, the nervous system, and metabolism. It’s also packed with protein and vitamin E, which protects brain cells.

Apple slices and a spoonful of peanut butter is a great snack. Even the good ‘ole PB&J sandwich is an excellent lunch choose as long as it’s on whole grain bread. If possible go with all natural almond or peanut butter and all natural fruit preserves.

12. Sunflower Seeds

Sunflower seeds are full of vitamin E, which has been shown to keep your brain healthy. Vitamin E can also improve your memory and prevent cognitive decline. No wonder they’re so popular in the dugout!

13. Pumpkin Seeds

The next time you carve a pumpkin, save those seeds because they’re packed with zinc. That’s because the metal has been found to assist with ADHD, support your memory function, and may even keep your brain healthy as you age.

14. Flax Seeds

There’s a reason the Latin name for flax seeds translates to “very useful.” They have antioxidants, improve digestion, fight cancer, support the immune system, lower cholesterol, and improve brain health thanks to rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

You can enjoy these benefits by putting flax seeds in smoothies, stirring them into yogurt, or adding them to pancake, waffle, or muffin recipes.

15. Fatty Fish

Fatty fish, such as salmon, trout, and sardines, are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Since 60 percent of your brain is made up of fat, you need omega-3s to build brain cells that support learning and memory.

What’s more, those who eat fish regularly had more gray matter in their brains. Gray matter contains a majority of the nerve

cells that control emotion, decision making, and memory.

16. Turkey

Turkey contains the amino acid tyrosine. This has been found to assist the brain in maintaining levels of dopamine, which is a key neurotransmitter to memory.

Furthermore, researchers in the U.S. military found that soldiers who had a diet that was rich in tyrosine performed better on memory and multitasking tests.

17. Grass-fed Beef

Believe it or not, there are some real health benefits associated with grass-fed beef. This includes higher portions of total omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins B2 (riboflavin) and E

18. Eggs

Remember our friend choline? Well, eggs are one of the richest sources of this essential nutrient. It’s suggested that the adequate intake of choline should 425 mg daily for women and 550 mg for men. In case you were curious, a single egg yolk contains 112 mg.

19. Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is a great breakfast option or snack because it’s loaded with protein, which gives you energy. It’s also packed with probiotics, which improves your immune system and decreases stomach issues. There’s also vitamin B12 in there to help red blood cells form, brain functions, and DNA synthesis.

20. Lentils

Lentils contain plenty of folates, a B vitamin known for helping boost brain power. Folate has also been found to decrease amino acid levels that can impair brain functioning. The easiest way to incorporate lentils into your diet is by adding them to salads or soups.

21. Oatmeal

“Everything in our body relies on energy to work — and that includes our brain, which for most people is the center of productivity. A well-fueled brain is an attentive, efficient and hardy brain — one that can do more tasks per hour and feel less strain from the effort,” writes Anna Johanson for NBC News.

Our bodies get energy through bloodstream glucose. So, when you want to be at peak performance, you want your blood sugar to be high enough to supply you with enough. which is the stripped-down version of the energy we eat in food. When your blood sugar is high enough to supply plentiful energy, you’re going to perform your best.

It’s recommended that productivity peaks need about 25 grams of glucose in the bloodstream. And a bowl of oatmeal in the morning can get you to that level. It’s one of my top healthy office snacks on the list.

22. Whole Grains

Just like oatmeal, whole grains ensure that you receive an adequate supply of energy to the brain via glucose. So when you make that PB&J or turkey sandwich for lunch make sure that you use whole grain bread.

23. Dark Chocolate

If you want to reward yourself with a little treat, then go with dark chocolate. Like berries, there are flavonoids found in dark chocolate. These can help preserve your brain power, as well as reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

24. Green Tea

Green tea has been found to boost alertness, focus, performance, and memory. It also comes with antioxidants and can make you feel more relaxed due to the amino acid L-theanine.

25. Coffee

I can’t live without coffee. I think it’s what gets me through the day — I also love the taste. Thankfully, research has found that coffee can improve mental performance, concentration, and alertness. It can also improve your willpower and even help you learn faster.

Of course, coffee is only beneficial when drank in moderation. You should also hold off on your first cup until you’ve been up for two hours since that’s when you could use a caffeine boost.
