The simplest test: on a vacation day with no obligations, when do you naturally wake, and when do you naturally start feeling tired? That range is your peak.
  • Wake before 7 a.m. naturally, tired by 10 p.m. → Lion.
  • Wake 7-9 a.m., tired around 11 p.m. → Bear.
  • Wake naturally after 9 a.m., wired past midnight → Wolf.
  • Wake often, sleep restlessly, feel anxious mornings → Dolphin.

Designing a Chronotype-Matched Calendar

For Lions:
  • Do your hardest strategic work 6-9 a.m.
  • Meetings 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • Wind down after 4 p.m. — avoid decisions.
For Bears:
  • Deep work 9-11 a.m.
  • Trough (2-4 p.m.) for admin, email, low-cognitive tasks.
  • Second wind 4-6 p.m. for brainstorming and 1:1s.
For Wolves:
  • Mornings for admin and low-cognitive tasks.
  • Deep work 3-7 p.m.
  • Best creative window is often late evening.
For Dolphins:
  • Buffered starts. Don’t schedule anything before 10 a.m.
  • Deep work in a mid-morning window with strong environmental control.
  • Aggressive protection from interruptions.

The Meetings-Alignment Problem

If you’re a Wolf and your team runs 9 a.m. all-hands, you’re always at a cognitive disadvantage. Some fixes:
  • Rotate meeting times. Once a month, hold important meetings in Wolf-friendly windows. Watch different voices dominate.
  • Advocate for chronotype-aware scheduling. The best managers ask their reports when they’re sharpest and honor it in 1:1 planning.
  • Pre-work as compensation. Wolves can prepare the night before to compensate for morning cognitive lag.

How Chronotypes Shift Across Life Stages

Chronotypes aren’t static. They drift predictably across a lifetime, and understanding the pattern helps you plan a career that works with your changing biology instead of against it. Teenagers are the most extreme night owls in the population — their circadian rhythm is genuinely delayed 2-3 hours compared to adults, which is why 7 a.m. high school start times are catastrophic for learning outcomes. A team spanning 25-year-olds and 55-year-olds spans roughly 4-5 hours of peak-time variance. The 10 a.m. all-hands that works for the middle bulge leaves both ends of the age distribution cognitively disadvantaged. Consider rotating high-stakes meetings across two different windows monthly (say, 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.) so both morning and evening chronotypes get their peak captured periodically.
